Direct Support Professional - Workforce Summit

California Direct Support Professional Workforce Committee

The CA Direct Support Professional Workforce Committee advocates and promotes efforts to build a stable and vibrant workforce ensuring people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities have the support they need to live a valued life.

This Committee is launching a campaign in direct response to the Developmental Disability system’s number one challenge—the direct support workforce crisis.  Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities deserve lives where they can be fully contributing and valued members of their communities.  The availability of qualified, competent, and stable Direct Support Professionals is integral in supporting people to accomplish their goals.

Direct Support Professionals have extensive skills and are entrusted to make critical decisions about our state’s must vulnerable residents each day.  Our campaign will focus on creating an environment where DSP skills and responsibilities are viewed as valuable, their wages are commensurate with their responsibilities, they receive training which prepares them for successful careers, and they become life-long advocates for the developmental disabilities system.

We can’t do this alone!  We need your help to ensure the State confronts the workforce crisis, thereby ensuring quality services for all Californian’s with I/DD.  In joining this committee, you are agreeing to:

  • ü  A one-year commitment to this committee and our collective cause
  • ü  Attend the DSP Workforce Summit, bringing along 1-2 DSPs
  • ü  Provide DSP participants the time to stay engaged with the Committee’s efforts
  • ü  $500 sponsorship fee to support the Summit and on-going advocacy efforts

The Summit will take place April 2nd & 3rd 2019 in Sacramento.  This one-and-a-half day event will include an Executive track and a Direct Support Professional track focused on stabilizing the DSP workforce.  The Summit will culminate in a rally at the Capitol demanding higher wages for our DSPs.  Ongoing grassroots advocacy at each organization’s local level will continue throughout the year.

Your action is necessary if we are to honor the Lanterman Act’s promise!
